But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side…. (1 Kings 5:4).
Rest, that’s the place God is trying to press me into. I’m not very good at resting. I love being on the move. I love having things to do. I love being active, sometimes too active, because my body, mind, and heart start to feel a bit worn.
Solomon builds God’s house. He does it after peace comes upon Israel. Some of us are trying to build things into our lives, when really what we need more than anything is rest. Many families are suffering from father’s and mother’s who are trying to make more money, have greater job success or a more successful ministry. What families really need is not more money, greater ministry success, a bigger home or a busier sports schedule. What they need is a place of rest.
When we create an atmosphere of rest within our homes, God gifts us with something to build for His kingdom. The greatest thing we can build first starts with what’s inside of our home. Only after we cultivate a place of rest does God bless us outside the home. Rest is something that’s cultivated first in the heart as it learns to sit in quietness before the Lord.
After the heart grows through seasons of resting with God it produces fruit everywhere it goes. A fruit producing person is a person who knows the Father’s heart because it has learned to say, “The Lord is my portion, I will wait for HIm.” Whenever we feel anxious, worn and tired, we must get back to a place of rest with our Heavenly Father.
Lord, I want to be a Kingdom worker for you. I want to produce great fruit for your Kingdom, but let the fruit I produce in my life first be the fruit you’re producing in me. Lord Jesus, be my joy and delight. I want to build something great for you. Let it be so, I pray, in Jesus name, Amen.
