Loving God With All of Your “Nephesh”

‘If your descendants watch how they live….(1 Ki 2:4).

I have an issue with spacial awareness. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve run into something, knocked something over or just didn’t see it in my path. You could say I have a hard time paying attention to my surroundings. I can become easily distracted and focused on getting things done instead of paying attention to the details around me.

The Lord tells Solomon that if the people of Israel watch how they live then there will always be a King leading Israel. God’s hand would continue to lead and guide them if they are, as it says in the original language, “careful of their way.”

As a Christian, I have many blind spots. Things that keep me from seeing the fuller picture. My own immaturity keeps me from being, “careful of my way.” Sometimes, quite frankly, I want to ignore what’s in front of me so I can continue on my own journey, with my own plans, and my own desired result. The Lord then tells Solomon that in order for the people to walk before the Lord it must be done with all of their heart. The Hebrew word here is “nephesh,” it encompasses a person’s whole being and all of their inner self.

I’ll be honest, if this is what is required to be a disciple and someone who walks before the Lord, I’ve got a long ways to go. This is why, as Christians, we need the grace of God, guiding us, leading us and breathing life into our inner man. There’s a new person that God is trying to unfold within us. As we traverse God’s path, we see that His hand starts to uncover that old person as we embrace our newness in Christ. What we need is Jesus invading our inner man and a heart that is fully surrendered to His love. As the heart surrenders and grows, the love of God becomes the breath of our inner man. Bitterness, anger, jealousy, and hatred choke the inner man. There will always be bumps along our journey, that’s why we must be even more conscious to be, “careful of our way.” WIsdom invades the soul of our inner man when we live surrendered lives, with hearts that are breathing in and out the love of God.

Lord, I want to be a woman so caught up in your love that every breath I breathe is for Jesus. Lord, I want to be careful of my way and walk in true wisdom. May I guard my heart with all diligence and not be given over to the deception of the enemy, because I have the grace of God. Lord, fill me with your love, I pray, in Jesus name, Amen.
