He named it Ebenezer, c saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.” ….(1 Samuel 7:12).
It is good to remember all the things that God has done. Those are the things we can rejoice in every day when we’re hit with negative thinking. Yes, the goodness of God is seen all over my life. His grace, His mercy, His provision is something that I can see as I place myself in His hands. I have so much to be thankful for because of all that God has done.
I’ll be honest though, it’s been much easier to focus on what God hasn’t done, instead of the grace that He has provided for me in countless ways. Sometimes the condition of my heart is not one of praise, but of disappointment and discouragement in the Lord. Ouch, that’s a hard one to admit for me, but in all honesty, this has sometimes been my struggle.
Maybe you’ve been there too, forgetful of His work, not remembering all that He has done. I think one of the places the devil loves to shove us into is a place of disappointment towards God. If he can get us to believe that God is unfair, unjust and unloving to us, he can push our hearts away from the safe hands of an all-knowing God who wants to shower us with more and more grace.
It wasn’t long ago when I was asking God, on an almost daily basis, “What are you doing? Why does this journey have to be so painful?” I had to get to a point where I ended my conversation with God saying, “I don’t understand all of this, but I know that you are good and so I trust you.” When we release our misguided attempts to try and understand God, we can take up His grace that meets us in our time of need. It might not solve all of our problems, but it can certainly give us what we need for the moment. Which is to simply be held in His arms and know that there, in His embrace, we’re going to be OK.
Lord, I trust you. May my life be a life that is always remembering all that you have done. I want my life to be a testimony to your grace in my life. I don’t want to hide the painful parts, because truly, they are the most purposeful thanks to your grace. I surrender everything to you, because you are so very good and so very trustworthy, in Jesus name, Amen.
